Sojourner in Triptychs Four
Mill 1
Renovation
Motley curtains fluttered behind grimy panes,
Amber-eyed cat takes up residence,
Rattled rheumatic pickup,
mud yard,
peeling paint and decaying wood:
the mill.
"Skinny fellow, always hanging 'round the creamery,"
said the man from Bell installing the phone as if this
explained everything.
He comes and goes in and out of the shadows,
patch the leaking tarpaper
polish the window
mend the wall with new pine boards
Ventures up our road, observing
sleek black dog is his partner, together wandering,
sometimes pausing to stare
His hair unkempt like wild uncut hay, cloudiness of
sky in his eyes,
clothes hang ragged, remains of shoes rest on his feet
We coldly return his gaze
We turn our backs
and he steps away with a secret smile
but no-one seemed to notice.
